Arrival in Venice

Starting in 2024, Venice introduced a visitor access fee of €3 to €10 for day-trippers, aiming to manage tourism and preserve the city's unique environment. Residents, students, and overnight visitors are exempt.

The fee applies only during peak season on some specific days and must be paid online or at kiosks before entry. This initiative supports local infrastructure and helps protect Venice's historic sites. For details on applicable dates and payment, visit  the official website of the Municipality of Venice.

Arriving in Venice:

  • By Plane - Venice Airport: Venice's primary airport is Marco Polo Airport (VCE), located about 8 kilometers from the city center. It offers both domestic and international flights, making it a convenient entry point for travelers from around the world.
  • By Train - Santa Lucia Train Station: Directly accessible via train, offering a picturesque arrival by boat as it sits right on the Grand Canal.
  • By Bus - Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto: The key points for those arriving by bus or car, providing easy access to water transport options for entering the city. Buses from mainland Italy and surrounding regions arrive at Piazzale Roma, the main bus terminal located just before the bridge to Venice. From there, you can transfer to water transport or walk into the city. For all waterbus routes, check the interactive map of the Venetian transport company.
  • By Car - Mestre or Piazzale Roma: Since Venice is car-free, you cannot drive directly into the city. However, you can drive to the mainland city of Mestre and park there, where parking is generally more affordable and convenient for day trips. If you prefer to park closer to Venice, large parking garages are available at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. From these parking areas, you can take water buses or taxis into the heart of the city.

Getting Around & Explore the City

Vaporetto, Tickets, Multi-Day Passes

When Do Tickets for Public Transport in Venice Become Worth It?

A single vaporetto (water bus) ticket in Venice is relatively expensive, so a day or multi-day transport pass becomes cost-effective quickly. Generally, a one-day ticket is worth it if you take three or more rides on public transport in a day.

Venice also offers multi-day passes (for 2, 3, or 7 days), which provide unlimited travel on vaporettos and buses at a much lower price per ride compared to buying single tickets.

For visitors staying outside the main islands, such as Mestre or Lido, transport passes are particularly useful, as frequent boat rides can add up in cost.

Additionally, Venice city passes, such as the Venice Discovery Pass, combine public transport with reduced entry fees for museums and attractions, making them a good option for sightseeing.
